Court AI Rules

New Jersey

Supreme Court of New Jersey, Notice to the Bar: Preliminary Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence by New Jersey Lawyers (Jan. 24, 2024)

Guidance only

Effective January 24, 2024 · Verified October 14, 2026.

Information about court rules, not legal advice. Rules change; read the order itself before you file.

Advisory guidelines say existing Rules of Professional Conduct require lawyers to check and verify all AI-generated information; no court rule requires AI disclosure or certification in filings.

“Because AI can generate false information, a lawyer has an ethical duty to check and verify all information generated by AI to ensure that it is accurate.”

The guidelines are still labeled "preliminary"; nothing on njcourts.gov marks them final or superseded. A March 30, 2026 Notice to the Bar on responsible AI use encourages firm AI policies and provides a template but imposes no filing requirement. A one-credit technology CLE that includes generative AI is reported to take effect January 1, 2027.

Individual courts or judges in New Jersey may have their own orders.
